The Oceanside College of Beauty team took home 2nd place and a cash award of $500 at last month’s stylist competition during the Bobbi Boss America’s Next Top Stylist, Live on Stage show held in Los Angeles. Stylists and models from all over Southern California participated in a variety of competitions at the event. The team from Oceanside won for their fantastic hair extension designs.
“It was so exciting and really overwhelming,” said Christie Elliott-Villagomez, “but I loved the pressure. I work really well under pressure and I like when there’s a time crunch and you just have to get it done.”
Christie acknowledged that the “time-crunch” had nothing to do will any ill-preparation on her part. She’d worked for days and days on her earth element style, creating the imagery of a rose in bloom on her niece Heaven’s hair.
Starting with black extensions, Christie first used a decolorization process so she could infuse the strands with the colors that best fit her creative concept.
“I was going for an avant guarde kind of look,” said Christie.
And she certainly got it! Christie said the judges were considering the “overall ambiance of how you did the hair.”
Christie’s vision included colored extensions of fuchsia, red and green woven into her niece’s dark hair. The results were amazing and Christie said she would love another opportunity to compete before she finishes up her cosmetology program in December.
“I would do it again in a heartbeat,” said Christie.
Amanda Cobian said the same. She said she loved “creating a look” for her model Kiana.
“I liked the whole experience,” said Amanda. “I’d never done anything like this before and I used sew-in hair extensions which was also new for me.”
Amanda’s creation was inspired by meadows and she went for a dramatic look. Like Christie, she painstakingly planned and executed her vision, adding finishing touches in the morning at school just before sending her model off to join her at the competition in LA. Unfortunately, Kiana drove with the windows down, not realizing the damage the whipping winds would cause.
“It fell apart,” said Amanda, “so we had to change everything when we got there.”
Amanda was so excited by the whole atmosphere of the event, the near catastrophe of her hair design didn’t faze her.
“I just loved the energy inside the room,” said Amanda. “Seeing all the other stylists in action, interacting with professionals. It was great. And Kiana’s hair wound up coming out great.”
Amanda is ready to be a professional, herself. She finished her cosmetology program this month and was working on her externship, hoping to land a job. But now that she’s had a taste of competitive styling, who knows what her future holds?
“I want to travel,” said Amanda. “I’m not sure exactly what I’ll do but I really like doing hair shows. They open up doors. Maybe I could become traveling stylist.”
